The Perfect 48-Hour Coastal Escape in Port Washington
Located just two hours north of Chicago and 30 minutes north of Milwaukee, Port Washington, Wisconsin, offers a cozy coastal retreat blending Lake Michigan adventure with authentic harbor town charm. This 48-hour guide covers everything from world-class salmon and trout fishing and historic lighthouse tours to boutique shopping and sunset harbor dining.
Friday: The Arrival + The Harbor Glow
There is a specific moment when you crest the hill on Highway 32 and the Lake Michigan horizon comes into view—that’s when you know your weekend has officially begun. After the drive up from the city, Friday night is all about shedding the "hustle" and embracing the "harbor glow."
5:00 PM – Check-in with a View Drop your bags at The Harborview. Ask for a lakefront room; there is nothing quite like watching the sun rise over the lighthouse from your window to reset your internal clock. If you prefer something with a touch of history, The Port Hotel, run as an Airbnb, offers that vintage, stone-walled charm that feels like a step back in time.
6:30 PM – A Toast to the Coast Walk down to the marina as the sun begins to dip. For dinner, head to Fork & Tap or Schooner Pub for a meal that feels authentically "Port." If the air is crisp, find a spot overlooking the marina to watch the golden sunset glow upon the water.
8:30 PM – The Moonlit Breakwater Walk Before turning in, take the "Port Tradition" walk out toward the Pier Head Light Station. The path is paved, the air is fresh, and the sound of the water against the breakwater is the ultimate natural white noise. It’s the perfect introduction to our harbor lifestyle.
Saturday: Tap Into Our History
After a restful night listening to the Lake Michigan waves, today is about uncovering the stories etched into our pre-Civil War buildings, maritime heritage and brewing history. Keep your eyes open for the Paint on Port murals along the way. Thirteen murals now adorn our walls, and you can find most as you explore town today. Cheers!
6:00 AM - It's Brew Time: Enjoy a different kind of brew to start the day. Get your morning cup of joe from Java Dock Cafe, a coffee shop and cafe housed in the Old Theatre Square building. Order from the walk-up window so you can head to Heart of the Harbor plaza to watch the sunrise (for early birds) or morning charter boat action. Grab a bite at Dockside Deli to continue the view with a delicious start to your day.
10:00 AM - Keeper of the Light: Head up the hill to the 1860 Light Station. It’s a step back in time to the life of a lighthouse keeper. The nostalgia here isn't manufactured—it’s preserved. Walk up to the top for a panoramic view of the city and harbor.
12:00 PM - Historic Franklin Street: Port Washington has the largest collection of pre-Civil War buildings in Wisconsin. Take a self-guided walking tour through the historic downtown district. Look for the distinctive "Cream City" brick, 1800s taverns, and iconic turret rooms. Try an immigrant-themed lunch at The Steerage for a bit of history with your fare.
2:00 PM - Port's Shipwrecks: Stop in at the Port Washington Historical Society Resource Center on Franklin Street to learn about the region's shipwrecks, iconic Port Washington businesses, and the harbor's storied history. Tap into interactive shipwreck displays to learn the stories of famous shipwrecks like the Niagara.
💡Pro Tip: Be sure to pop into all the unique boutiques, gift shops, and art galleries that now breathe new life into the storied buildings. Ask the shop owners about their shop's history. They can probably tell you the last century's worth!
5:00 PM - Craft Brews on the Marina: A stop at Inventors Brewpub is a must for beer lovers. Take in the display of Port Washington's long beer brewing history - dating back to before Wisconsin became a state! - before you head inside to sample craft beer from our modern craft brewery. Order the Wright Beer Flight to try four samples, and ask about a brewery tour before you sit down for classic pub fare or their famous poutine. Grab a seat next to a window for spectacular views of the marina.
7:30 PM - Beer Whisperers: Don't miss your chance to cap the night at Sir James Pub on Franklin Street. They boast the largest selection of craft beer in the Beer State, with over 900 to choose from. The bartenders are "beer whisperers." Give them a hint of your taste, and they will find the perfect brew for you.
💡Pro Tip: While Port Washington is rich in history, it isn’t a "museum town." It’s a living, breathing community where you can touch the history -- and then go grab a craft beer in a building that’s seen a century of lake storms.
Sunday: Catch the Big One
Port Washington's charter fishing is historically awesome. Try your hand at catching the region's salmon or trout before exploring the beaches by land. Ask for a late check-out at your hotel so you can continue to explore after your charter.
5:30 AM - Reel Good Time: Get to the north slip of the marina early to catch your charter fishing boat. It's just a short walk from your hotel if you stayed downtown. Bring your camera for breathtaking sunrise views as you head out and sprawling city views on your way in. Port Washington is #1 in salmon and trout fishing on this side of Lake Michigan. Spend the morning reeling in the big one -- and a reely good time!
💡Pro Tip: Bring a cooler to store your fish filets after your charter. The crew will filet them for you.
11:00 AM - Led Zeppelin on the Beach: Refuel at Daily Baking Co. after your adventure with local bakery and a hot brew. Once you have your land legs back, head on foot or in your car up the hill to Upper Lake Park, with its loop lined with spectacular views, a lighthouse-themed playground and Beer Garden nestled in the trees. Take the stairs down the bluff to North Beach to get your toes in the sand. Just a short walk down the beach and you will encounter the iconic Mile Rock. This boulder is a locally-famous marker with beloved Led Zeppelin mural - a great selfie spot!
1:00 PM - The Water's Edge: Walk the beach back to town, meeting up with the Harbor Walk as you get closer to downtown. If you have time, follow the Harbor Walk along the waterline to Rotary Park and Coal Dock Park or even on to South Beach. Or take this time to check out of your hotel.
2:00 PM - Picture Perfect Picnic: When you're ready for lunch, visit the quirky Breakwater Deli & Nostalgia for a bit of treasure hunting as you pack your picnic lunch. They feature fresh-smoked meat sandwiches from the original Ewig Bros Fish market smokers and all the extras you'll need for your picnic. On your way out of town, take your picnic to Lion's Den Gorge, a five-minute drive south from downtown Port Washington. This nature preserve has miles of trails and a must-see beach at the base of a beautiful ravine. Dine up top or on the beach for an unforgettable experience to cap your weekend.
